Let me share how I got started as a Purposeful Entrepreneur serving other like-minded business owners…

My name is Marcia Bench. I didn't start out to become a Chief Entrepreneurial Officer as I am of Purposeful Entrepreneur.com now! I began my quest for life purpose-based work when I was still a teenager, and continued looking for the meaning and fulfillment I knew was possible in a series of jobs and through 10 years of college and law school...but it still eluded me.

It was only when I started my first part-time business in 1986, after waking up in the middle of the night with an idea for a class I wanted to teach - writing the text myself - that I began to feel like my life was getting on purpose. Of course, I didn't yet have the full picture of the Purposeful Entrepreneur model yet - we were still 20 years from the shift in consciousness that is now occurring! But I could sense the seed of something big.

Just a few years later, I wrote my first book, When 9 to 5 Isn't Enough, published by Hay House, and conducted a 10-month national tour helping people connect with their purpose in their work. It was so eagerly received that I knew I had to continue! So I conducted more workshops and seminars, wrote more books, and worked individually with seminar participants who became my consulting clients. And many of them grappled with exactly the same issues I had: fulfillment, meaning and purpose at work! I developed a process for discovering your life purpose (which I still use today).

Fast forward to 2001, the beginning of the "dot bomb" era...I'm sure you remember, things were tough! But I was burning out fast as a career consultant and was just finishing up a full year of coach training to become a business coach. I had written a few books, done a lot of speaking, and worked with over 500 individual clients...but I found myself stuck in a dead-end job I hated, and was not sure what was next.

Then, when my husband and I were coming home from sharing a family Thanksgiving, I remember driving across the open desert at dusk. Suddenly, like a bolt of lightning, it struck me: I could combine my years of experience in career development with my newly developed coaching skills by doing teleclasses and have a one-of-a-kind career coach training school.

Just 45 days later, that inspiration was launched as Career Coach Institute, the first of 5 purpose-driven coaching programs I developed.
